Apple’s Touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro: What We Know Before Launch

Tim Cook, by Bloomberg’s account, used to drop by Apple’s industrial design studio for about an hour once a month, at most. His successor goes several times a week, sometimes more than once a day. That detail, from Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter on Oct. 4, as summarized by MacRumors, says a lot about one of the first big Macs of John Ternus’s tenure: a 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro with an OLED touch screen that Gurman now says will be “significantly lighter” than today’s model.

None of this is announced. Everything below is reporting and rumour, labelled as such.

Touchscreen MacBook Pro release date: October or November

Start with timing, because that is where early coverage got ahead of itself. The machine is not reported for Apple’s Oct. 13 event. Gurman’s Oct. 4 newsletter, per MacRumors, says that event is built around a smart home hub, a new HomePod mini and a new Apple TV 4K. We covered the rest of that week’s rumour slate in our Oct. 13 event story.

Timeline: Gurman first hears of the project in January 2023; M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro launch March 3, 2026; John Ternus becomes Apple CEO Sept. 1; Gurman reports the OLED model is significantly lighter Oct. 4; a reported Oct. 13 event for home products; macOS 27.2 expected late October; reported October to November window for the touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro.

The laptop is on a looser clock. “Apple, I believe, will introduce its first touchscreen MacBook Pro this fall, as early as October. It could slip to November, but as early as October,” Gurman said, as quoted by MacRumors on Oct. 1. In his Oct. 4 newsletter he still expected an October or November introduction. The units are being tested on macOS 27.2, a build already in beta, and MacRumors notes that version is expected toward the end of October. Our read: a late-October press release, separate from the home-products event, is the likelier path than a stage reveal on Oct. 13.

There is history here. Gurman first heard about the project in January 2023, and earlier reports pointed to a late-2026 to early-2027 window, with memory shortages flagged as a possible drag in April, according to iClarified’s recap.

OLED MacBook Pro specs, as reported

Here is what Gurman has described across his reporting, per MacRumors’ Oct. 4 summary:

  • Display: OLED, which Gurman has previously described as tandem OLED, with touch input. These would be the first MacBooks with a touch screen.
  • Chips: the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max, not a new generation. Some outlets, including GSMArena, have written M6; Gurman’s reporting as relayed by MacRumors says M5.
  • Design: thinner, with a Dynamic Island in place of the notch.
  • Weight: “significantly lighter,” with no figure given. Apple “has reengineered the machine’s interior, miniaturizing parts and rearranging components to make the computer much easier to carry,” Gurman wrote.

For scale, today’s MacBook Pro weighs up to 4.7 pounds (about 2.1 kg) and the 15-inch MacBook Air up to 3.3 pounds (about 1.5 kg), MacRumors notes. How far the new Pro closes that gap is the open question.

Touch is meant to sit alongside the trackpad, not replace it. Gurman describes controls that enlarge after a tap, menus that appear near the finger, and scrolling and pinch-to-zoom. iClarified adds that the system is not designed for typing on the screen.

MacBook Pro price in Canada now, and what OLED could add

No price has been reported. Gurman’s line is only that the OLED models are expected to sit above the existing MacBook Pros and cost more, and it is not clear yet whether Apple keeps the MacBook Pro name at all. Today’s lineup already got pricier this year. Apple raised prices when it introduced the M5 Pro and M5 Max models in March, offsetting the increase with doubled base storage. The 14-inch M5 Pro starts at US$2,199 (CA$2,999), and the 16-inch at US$2,699 (CA$3,599).

Current MacBook Pro (Apple.ca) Starting price
14-inch, M5, 1TB CA$2,399
14-inch, M5 Pro, 1TB CA$2,999
16-inch, M5 Pro, 1TB CA$3,599
14-inch, M5 Max, 2TB CA$4,999
16-inch, M5 Max, 2TB CA$5,399

Those figures come from Apple’s Canadian newsroom and iPhone in Canada’s March tally, which put the increase at CA$300 across most models and up to CA$600 on the M5 Max.

Why Ternus matters to this laptop

Ternus took over as CEO on Sept. 1, with Cook moving to executive chairman, after running hardware engineering. “Since becoming CEO, however, he has immersed himself in the industrial design and human interface teams,” Gurman wrote, per MacRumors, and Ternus has handed finance to Kevan Parekh and supply chain to Sabih Khan to make the room.

A touch-screen Mac is the kind of product that needs exactly that pairing. The hardware is the easy half; the harder half is a macOS that responds to a fingertip without breaking for everyone who never lifts a hand off the trackpad.

What to do if you’re buying a Mac now

If you need a MacBook Pro this month, the current M5 Pro models aren’t going anywhere, and the OLED version is reported to use the same chips, so the performance gap should be small. If the screen, touch or weight is what you want, waiting a few weeks costs little. Just budget above CA$2,999, because nobody expects the first OLED Mac to undercut the one it sits above.
