The ROG Xreal R1’s big number is 240 Hz. The honest one is 120

The number Asus and Xreal printed on the marketing is 240. The number Tom’s Hardware’s review keeps coming back to is 120.

The ROG Xreal R1, an $849.99 collaboration between Asus’s Republic of Gamers division and the AR-glasses maker Xreal, got a full test in Tom’s Hardware’s review, published today by senior editor Brandon Hill. Asus billed the R1 at launch as the “world’s first 240Hz micro-OLED gaming AR glasses” — a genuinely new claim for face-mounted displays, where 120 Hz has been the ceiling. Hill’s testing found the claim comes with a catch big enough to walk through: the panels are native 120 Hz, and the 240 Hz figure comes from a software feature called Frame Rate Boost that interpolates its way there.

When he turned it on, the picture got worse.

One disclosure, because house rules require it and the story depends on it: we have not worn the R1. What follows synthesizes Hill’s hands-on testing with Asus’s launch materials and the spec record. The verdicts on image quality are Hill’s; the framing around them is ours.

The framing matters this week because Hill’s review landed six days before Samsung takes a London stage. Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked is confirmed for July 22, and while the official invitation talks foldables, the company previewed “Intelligent Eyewear” with Google in May and is reported to be bringing glasses to the event. The R1’s window as the most interesting thing you can strap to your face is short.

The boost that goes backward

The R1’s display hardware is legitimately good on paper: dual 0.55-inch Sony micro-OLED panels at 1920 x 1080 per eye, a claimed 0.01 ms response time, 700 nits of brightness, and a 57-degree field of view that projects the equivalent of a 171-inch screen at four meters. Running natively at 120 Hz, Hill reported no visual anomalies. He pushed Battlefield 6 at over 100 frames per second from a desktop with an RTX 4060 Ti, and also tested with an MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ handheld.

Then there’s the headline mode. Frame Rate Boost is the software algorithm that doubles the effective refresh to 240 Hz, and it is the entire reason this product has “R1” energy instead of being another Xreal One variant. Hill’s finding, verbatim:

“Switching to this mode resulted in worse image quality, with a blurrier image and some jitter (especially at the outer edges of the viewable area), which led to eye strain.”

He tried it through the bundled ROG Control Dock and through a direct Thunderbolt 4 connection. Same result both ways, which points at the interpolation itself rather than the plumbing. His conclusion was that the 240 Hz mode “was more of a novelty” than something he’d rely on. One caveat Hill flags himself: his interpupillary distance measured 71 mm, outside the R1’s supported 57–66 mm range, which could worsen his sensitivity to the mode’s edge artifacts. It could not manufacture blur that isn’t there at 120 Hz on the same face. And not every tester has come away as cold. Android Headlines’ Justin Diaz, reviewing the R1 in June, called the ability to scale to 240 Hz part of what “makes gaming so, so satisfying on these glasses.”

Still: the spec that justifies the “R” in the name, and arguably the price, is the one part of the display Hill recommends around. That’s not a fatal review. It is a deflating one.

What $849.99 actually buys

Strip out the 240 and the R1 is a well-built 120 Hz product with real strengths. Hill liked the angular ROG design work and the shimmering grey finish. Electrochromic dimming (glass that darkens electronically in three levels, so you’re not hunting for a clip-on blackout shade) comes standard; he called it “a must at this price point.” The Bose-tuned open-air speakers earned a “decent,” with respectable bass. There’s a line of nine customizable RGB LEDs along the temples, because this is a ROG product and the lights are load-bearing brand identity, even though they face everyone except the person wearing them.

The problem is the shelf the R1 sits on. Xreal’s own One Pro sells for $599 and the One S for $449, and the R1’s 57-degree field of view is identical to the One Pro’s. Hill’s mixed verdict lands exactly there: with the 240 Hz mode compromised, it’s hard to see what the extra $250 over the One Pro buys beyond dimming glass, RGB, and a badge. His bottom line was that the R1 is promising but “the high price tag may stifle its reach.”

None of this was visible in May, when Asus opened preorders promising the “world’s first 240Hz 0.01ms micro-OLED gaming AR glasses” and real-time 2D-to-3D conversion, with shipping from June 1. The fine print was always there (the press release lists the refresh rate as 240 Hz “with boosted frame rate enabled”), but fine print is what reviews exist to test. Hill did, and for him the marquee number didn’t hold.

Six days on the clock

Now the calendar. Samsung’s Unpacked runs July 22 at 2 p.m. BST in London. The invitation is all foldables. But Samsung and Google showed their Gentle Monster and Warby Parker “Intelligent Eyewear” at Google I/O in May: camera-and-Gemini glasses, promised for fall in select markets. And Android Central’s Sanuj Bhatia reports, citing Korea’s Seoul Economic Daily, that Galaxy Glasses will be announced at this Unpacked. Earlier leaks cited in the same report describe two versions: one without a screen, and one with a built-in display those leaks compare to Xreal’s.

So here is the falsifiable version of the threat. For Samsung to make the R1 irrelevant on the 22nd, it would need to announce a display-bearing model that does the R1’s actual job: accept low-latency video over USB-C from a PC, handheld, or console, at 120 Hz or better, under $849.99, shipping before fall. That’s the whole checklist. AR gaming glasses in 2026 are, functionally, wearable monitors, and the R1’s real moat is not the 240 Hz party trick but the plumbing: it connects like a monitor, to anything with DisplayPort over USB-C.

Our read: Samsung won’t check those boxes. Everything it has shown points the other way — AI-first, camera-first, fashion-house frames, Gemini as the interface, fall timing. Even the rumored display model is described in the leaks by reference to Xreal, which is what you say about a fast follower, not a category killer. Samsung is building glasses you talk to. Asus and Xreal built a screen you plug in. Those products will sit on the same shelf and barely compete.

Which means the R1 survives next week. Its problem isn’t in London. Its problem is the settings menu, where the latest reviewer of the “world’s first 240Hz” gaming glasses found the best available fix for the flagship feature: switch it back to 120.
