TikTok’s AI Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct: What Changes for Creators

TikTok wants the For You feed to work like a till. On Oct. 5, at Advertising Week New York, the company announced a batch of AI tools for advertisers, led by two aimed squarely at shoppers: Buy Direct, a one-tap checkout inside the app, and Shopping Assistant, a conversational AI agent that answers product questions and completes the purchase in the same chat.

The rest of the list is for the people paying for ads. Agentic Leads is an AI agent that chats with prospects. TikTok’s Ad Network now sells US placements across “nearly 400,000 apps worldwide.” And GMV Max, the automated ad product for TikTok Shop sellers, will start counting affiliate commissions as a cost. That last change is the one creators should read twice.

How TikTok Buy Direct and the AI Shopping Assistant work

TikTok describes Buy Direct as “a seamless in-app checkout solution that allows users to make purchases directly from a brand, without leaving TikTok.” In practice that means tapping buy on a video in the feed and never landing on a retailer’s website. Adweek reported that this runs separately from TikTok Shop, the marketplace TikTok opened in September 2023, and that both tools are beginning to roll out in the US. TikTok says it is building them with “Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, Stripe, and more.”

Shopping Assistant is the agentic half. In TikTok’s words, it “understands context, remembers user needs, and finds the right products just for them, faster,” and it handles “product details, shipping, sizing, availability and purchasing all within one conversation.” TikTok says it is “built into several TikTok touchpoints” but hasn’t said which ones.

Two caveats. PYMNTS reported that both tools are offered to advertisers through eligibility-based testing, so most users won’t see them yet. And the announcement says nothing about data. An assistant that “remembers user needs” is, by design, storing what you told it you wanted. TikTok hasn’t published how long that memory lasts or whether you can clear it.

David Kaufman, TikTok’s global head of monetization product partnerships, framed the goal plainly. “We’re trying to move people from discovery all the way through to action,” he told Adweek.

What GMV Max changes for TikTok Shop affiliate creators

GMV Max automates TikTok Shop ad campaigns and, per TikTok, pushes “spend behind content that is performing well.” Until now “performing well” meant gross sales. The update “will further improve advertiser profitability by factoring in key business costs – like affiliate commissions, coupons, and referral fees,” the company says.

A creator video that sells a lot at a high commission may now look worse to the algorithm than a brand’s own clip that sells a little less at zero commission.

That is our read, not TikTok’s, and the company hasn’t published how the weighting works. But the logic of optimizing for margin instead of revenue is that the most expensive sales channel gets less of the ad budget. For many TikTok Shop sellers, affiliate creators are that channel. Creators on high commission rates should watch whether paid boosts behind their videos change once the update reaches their sellers. TikTok gave no rollout date for it.

Buy Direct raises a separate question that TikTok also left open: if a brand sells through its own checkout rather than TikTok Shop, does a creator who drove the sale still earn a TikTok Shop affiliate commission? Nothing in the announcement says so.

Agentic Leads, Smart+ and a 400,000-app ad network

For advertisers, Agentic Leads uses “AI-guided conversations” in direct messages and on advertiser websites to “capture, qualify and convert” prospects. Search Ads Campaign, powered by Smart+, automates keywords and creative for TikTok search ads, and Smart+ Creative Selection pulls brand assets, AI-generated creative and creator content into one approval queue.

TikTok also said its MCP connector, which lets outside AI agents build and manage TikTok campaigns, now plugs into Claude, Kimi, Manus, Perplexity, Replit, Snowflake, Tencent WorkBuddy and the IAB Tech Lab Agent Registry, with “over 200% increase in advertisers using our MCP” since launch. The pitch, as Marketing Dive put it, is timed to the holiday season.

Is TikTok Shop available in Canada? What to know

Not yet. Shopify’s Canadian guide, updated May 15, lists TikTok Shop markets as the US, the UK, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. TikTok has not announced a Canadian launch, and every commerce feature in the Oct. 5 post is pitched at the US.

TikTok’s legal footing in Canada is steadier than it was. Ottawa’s November 2024 order to wind up TikTok Technology Canada was set aside by the Federal Court in January with the government’s agreement, and on March 9 Industry Minister Mélanie Joly allowed the company to keep operating under binding undertakings, including security gateways for Canadians’ data and an independent third-party monitor. Those undertakings mention supporting Canadian creators. They don’t mention shopping.

For Canadian creators, that means the US is still where TikTok commerce money is made, and GMV Max’s new cost-weighting is a reason to diversify beyond affiliate commission. For Canadian shoppers, an agent that buys for you is arriving on several fronts at once; we covered which of Amazon’s AI buying tools reach Canada ahead of Prime Big Deal Days.

There was one Canadian name in TikTok’s announcement. George Velonias, head of growth marketing at Wayfair Canada, called the TikTok MCP “indispensable to our AI-powered campaign workflows.” He was praising the agent that buys ads. The one that buys sofas isn’t here.
